M. V. Rao

Industrial Safety Specialist — Retired Safety General Manager

39 years of industrial experience

M. V. Rao is a graduate mechanical engineer and retired Safety General Manager with 39 years of industrial experience, concentrated in industrial safety, occupational health, 5S and TPM.

His career has been spent developing and implementing safety management systems, workplace safety practice, accident prevention programmes and safety awareness across industrial environments — work that depends as much on engaging employees as on writing procedure.

He has also worked extensively in 5S and TPM, using both to improve workplace discipline, housekeeping, equipment reliability and employee involvement, with safety held as the first priority throughout.

His view is that safety is not the safety department's responsibility but everyone's, and that a safe workplace appears only where management commitment, employee participation, disciplined process and continuous awareness arrive together. The work he is interested in is moving organizations from safety as a compliance requirement to safety as a culture.

His approach to safety

  1. Identify
  2. Assess
  3. Prevent
  4. Control
  5. Improve
